I was in Lahaina in April, just before the fire. It was raining. I was walking around trying to find as many ukulele stores as possible. I got thrown out of one for being too wet and still wanting to try some instruments. The rain ended, we had shaved ice, and I dried out enough to be allowed to try some instruments in a store nearby. I very nearly bought a beautiful tenor uke, but was concerned about flying it back home to Seattle.
I’ve loved Maui since the first time I visited as a cruise stop. Then when my daughter and son in law were assigned to Haleakala with the Natl Parks it gave us a reason to go back. Lahaina was our favorite place to go while they were at work. It hit me hard, even though I wasn’t a local. I could picture every place you wrote about 😊 Kula was where their house was that they rented, I’m glad it wasn’t damaged too much in the upcountry fires. So many memories! Thanks Toby❣️
Of course, not good memories of the divorce. Going to Hawaii on the other the other islands was like going back to the past by about 20 years, but in a good way.
Love your letter and your memories of Lahaina. I too hope more help for Lahaina is coming in.
Last year I suggested to the square dance club I am part of, that we donate to Maui strong. We organized a Hawaiian themed special dance and the proceeds went to Maui. This year we are doing the same. Maybe one day we manage to save up and visit, it's on my bucket list.
We also love Maui, we have 2 more trips planned for this year to go, we feel we can help support the locals and the economy by supporting the local businesses while there. They need the financial support. ❤️🩹

Thank you for sharing... wish you'd bought that uke and given it a loving home
So do I. It probably does not exist any more.

Yes, and again, yes. We all had so many memories there, for me they were happy ones
Maui was my favorite island and had the best beaches. I visited it at the time in the 70s. Loved that Banyon tree.
My ex husband was born and raised on the Big Island. He's pure Portuguese. I have many fond memories of our trip there.
