Almost exactly two years after I purchased a jar of honey from a man on the side of the road in North Dakota, I rattled a spoon in the almost empty jar. I scraped the sides for the last bit of pale, crystallized honey that reminded me of distilled prairie sunlight.
Most of the things you pick up on camping trips are ephemeral; memories and photos, maybe. There's no room in a trailer or a tent for mementos, knickknacks; or physical objects.
But every now and then, you get to pick up something that really captures the essence of a place that you visited, and this particular jar of honey was such a treat.
We kept it in the trailer, so that we only used it when we were camping, and that made it last for two whole years.
