Episode 11:
The drive back to our office from Pearl's house was tense.
Ilima sat in the passenger seat with the rigid posture of a queen who'd had a royal decree ignored, while Keone kept shooting me glances in the rearview mirror as if to check I was okay—which I was, even if worried by this escalation of events.
Afternoon light had faded to the soft lavender of evening by the time we pulled up to K & K’s little shack.
"Well," Ilima said, breaking the silence as Keone cut the engine, "that was a waste of time."
“We learned a lot, actually,” Mr. K said. "We confirmed the box is missing, which means someone else knows about the documents. That’s big.”
"And we know Pearl was poisoned," I added as we exited the vehicle. "That's significant."
