After a couple of days of enjoying the buffalo, wild horses, and prairie dogs of Theodore Roosevelt National Park, we drove for nine hours through a rainstorm to arrive at Lake Metigoshe in North Dakota, near the border of Canada. Our plan was to tackle Voyageurs National Park in the coming week, but we’d been unable to get any reservations or a boat pass to the main park, which is deep in a watery area.
The stormy driving was not pleasant. Dangerous, in fact, as big rigs roared by, burying us in avalanches of water every few minutes. Mike was gray with fatigue by the end of the day when we pulled into a state park rendered invisible by rain, dark, and heavy tree cover.
Somehow, Mike was able to park the rig in our blustery, muddy, deserted campsite with a flashlight and his head-to-toe rain gear on (I’d forgotten to bring any) and, once the camper was stabilized, Koa and I ran through the elements to get inside.
We were immediately soaked and filthy.
We all dried off with the same beach…
