Westport Beach is a private campground north of Fort Bragg. We had tried several times to camp there during 2020, but something always prevented us: a mudslide on Highway 1, family obligations, or closure due to COVID.
Determined to make it there on our way home from the long trip, we turned off the 101 at Leggett, famous for the Chandelier Drive Through Redwood Tree, for a break before we continued on down Highway One to the ocean where the beach campground is located.
Pearl, our new Nissan Armada tow vehicle, was way too wide to drive through the tree, but it was fun to see it again. We actually DID drive through it back in 2008, taking our daughter to college at Humboldt State for the first time. Seeing the huge tree and its kitschy gift/snack shop funky and unchanged, brought a smile to my face.
The place is worth a stop if you’re passing by on 101; a wonder of the world presented humbly, with ice cream cones and flush toilets available on the side.
