“What is going on here! This is an active fire zone!” I exclaimed. “This can’t be right!” I couldn’t get past outraged disbelief as we drove deeper into a Yosemite National Park, on fire, led be a pilot vehicle.
Mike didn’t reply to my outburst, just fumbling to reach for his camera as we drove slowly forward behind the CalFire truck.
I gasped in fright as we entered a towering inferno where the forest was burning on both sides of the road. We were driving right into it and my brain refused to process even as everything in me tightened up, preparing for action.
Flaming trees burned on either side of us as far as we could see. The heat was intense even through the windows, the sound akin to a waterfall’s roar. Sparks flew by, confetti in a hell parade.
