They thought they could take me, and they were right.

We discovered Flaming Gorge, Utah, when Googling “sights to see nearby” after we finished exploring Wild Horse Scenic Loop near Green River, Wyoming.

“Looks interesting,” I said, showing a review, with pictures, to Mike on my phone. “It’s only a little out of our way.” The photos showed Flaming Gorge Reservoir, created by a dam in the Green River, cutting through dark red sandstone cliffs that appeared to change color with every slant of daylight. The water, thousands of feet down, was a stunning, deep turquoise–if the pictures were to be believed. “How come we haven’t heard of this place?”

Mike shrugged. “Maybe the locals are keeping it secret.”

“Well, let’s go see.”

The Flaming Gorge treat began for us when we left the town of Green River, Wyoming, and drove on meandering Highway 530 toward Utah. We passed through massive, color-saturated cliffs in yellow, buff, pink and red sedimentary rock that a plaque informed us had once been ancient sand dunes.
