The fundraiser for the Hilo Women’s Shelter had drawn a full house—off-duty cops in aloha wear, doctors in pressed khakis, community leaders with their spouses, and dozens of volunteers who kept the Shelter running.
The ballroom at the Hilo Grand Hotel glowed with soft light, music and laughter, the setting defining an event formal enough to hold its shape with both glitter and substance.
Kent stood near the silent auction table, sipping a drink as he watched Koa and Ella laugh over a a ridiculous painting of a surfing mongoose someone had donated. Koa’s hair was swept up to expose her slender neck, and she wore a dress that skimmed over her figure like water and shimmered with fish-scale sequins.
