Chapter 37: Out at the lean-to garage, as Kimo changed into a clean shirt for the drive to see Ella, Koa grabbed a roll of heavy twine resting on the workbench and stowed it in the storage box on the back of the ATV.

The vehicle was filthy with mud and the rubberized bed Kimo used to move taro and other items was heavily smeared. Working quickly, Koa filled a bucket of water from the hose on the side of the house. She squirted dish soap she found resting on the utility sink into the bucket and then threw the entire contents over the cargo bed. Using a piece of sacking, she scrubbed at the mud coating the area.

“What you doin’?” Kimo’s suspicious tone from behind her made Koa jump.

“Cleaning your ATV, Uncle.” Koa kept her back to him and her arm moving, sloshing suds and mud out of the utility bed.

“Why?”

“Because it’s dirty.”

“That’s not why, girl.” His voice was definite. “But it’s not a bad idea.”

Koa didn’t reply; her heart was pounding and her voice wouldn’t sound right if she tried to speak.
