The Flaming Gorge Recreational Area encompasses a large portion of land around the border of Utah and Wyoming. This spectacular corner of the northeast part of Utah is a hidden gem overshadowed by the state’s many other attractions, led by Zion, Bryce Canyon, Arches and Canyonlands National Parks. We’d already visited those (documented in my first travel memoir, Open Road) so we were excited to see what this new area had to offer.
I scrolled through an online gallery as we drove toward the Gorge. Photos showcased a canyon created by the Green River as it cut through dark red sandstone cliffs. These high formations appeared to change color with every slant of daylight, and the river, thousands of feet below campgrounds situated on a bluff above, was a stunning, deep turquoise green. “How come we haven’t heard of this place?”
Mike shrugged, his eyes on the road—always a good idea, and especially when towing a six thousand pound trailer. “Maybe the locals are keeping it secret.”
