The colors of New Mexico in winter are subtle: umber, buff, sage green, beige, a gray like the underbelly of a lizard.

And then: light hits the land, and shadows of vermillion and eggplant purple light the cracks and chasms; burnt sienna and gold gleam against a passion-blue sky, and the high mountains shimmer with silver snow.

After the soft humid light of San Francisco and Oregon, the sheer distance one can see across the landscape is a little disorienting, like vertigo but without the heights.

The moon, a half-sucked mint, it’s close enough to touch with my tongue.

I am here in January at a lovely spot called Ojo Santa Fe Spa and Resort attending a creativity retreat put on by my artist coach Peleg Top. His workshops were amazing, and if you ever have a chance to try any of his offerings, I highly recommend them.
